The Department of Hospitality Science and Hospitality Association, in association with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organised a Workshop on “Bartending – Mixology and Flaring” on 3 August 2024. The workshop was conducted to provide students with practical exposure to specialised beverage service skills and contemporary techniques used in the hospitality industry.
The programme aimed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry practices by providing students with opportunities to interact with experienced professionals and observe live demonstrations of bartending, mixology, garnish preparation, and flaring techniques.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Mr Denzil Celestine Dcosta, Head, Department of Hospitality Science, who welcomed the gathering and introduced the resource persons from Martiny Mixology, Mangaluru.
Rev. Dr Alwin Serrao, Principal, addressed the students and expressed his appreciation to Martiny Mixology for conducting the workshop at the college. He highlighted the importance of acquiring specialised hospitality skills and encouraged students to develop practical competencies that could enhance their employment opportunities and support future entrepreneurial ventures.
The resource persons then conducted the technical session. The workshop provided an introduction to bartending, offering students an overview of the profession and its relevance within the hospitality industry. The experts also explained the basic principles of mixology and the preparation of cocktails and mocktails.
A practical demonstration on garnish preparation was conducted, highlighting the importance of presentation and visual appeal in beverage service. The resource persons demonstrated the preparation of various mocktails, enabling students to observe professional techniques and methods of beverage preparation.
A major attraction of the workshop was the demonstration of flaring and fire-flaring techniques. The resource persons explained and demonstrated these specialised presentation skills, giving students an insight into the performance-oriented aspects of professional beverage service.
A total of 96 students participated in the workshop. The students actively observed the demonstrations and gained practical knowledge from experienced industry professionals. The workshop provided an opportunity to connect theoretical concepts learned in the classroom with contemporary hospitality practices. The activity also helped students understand the importance of presentation, creativity, precision, customer service and professional skills in beverage operations.
The workshop enabled students to gain an understanding of professional bartending and mixology practices, including beverage preparation, garnish techniques, mocktail preparation and presentation. Students were also introduced to specialised flaring techniques. The session enhanced their practical knowledge, creativity, confidence and awareness of career and entrepreneurial opportunities in the hospitality industry.
The workshop on “Bartending – Mixology and Flaring” was successfully conducted with the participation of 96 students. The expertise and demonstrations provided by the resource persons from Martiny Mixology, Mangaluru, enriched the students' practical knowledge and understanding of beverage service.
At the conclusion of the workshop, Mr Denzil Celestine Dcosta expressed his gratitude to the resource persons and Mr Vinod Kumar, the Managing Partner of Martiny Mixology, for their valuable contribution and for arranging the workshop at Milagres College.
The programme served as a valuable industry-oriented experiential learning initiative, equipping students with specialised skills and enhancing their professional readiness for the hospitality industry.
