The Department of Hospitality Science, Milagres College, Mangaluru, in association with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organised a Cake Mixing Ceremony on 23 November 2024 at the Food and Beverage Service Laboratory. The programme was organised as a practical and experiential learning activity to introduce students to the traditional preparation associated with Christmas cake production.
Cake mixing is an important culinary tradition in hospitality establishments during the festive season. The activity provided students with an opportunity to understand the preparation, handling and mixing of a variety of ingredients used in traditional Christmas cakes while experiencing the professional hospitality environment.
The ceremony was conducted in the 4th Floor F&B Service Laboratory (408). The programme was graced by Mrs Sumitha Pinto, Gurkar – Mother Teresa Ward, Milagres, as the Chief Guest.
The Cake Mixing Ceremony involved the traditional mixing of a variety of ingredients used in Christmas cake preparation. Students actively participated in the preparation and mixing process under the guidance of the faculty members. The activity provided students with practical exposure to ingredient identification, preparation, measurement, handling and systematic mixing. The ceremony also created a festive and collaborative atmosphere, encouraging students to work together and understand the importance of coordination and teamwork in professional hospitality operations.
Students of the Department of Hospitality Science actively participated in the activity and gained practical exposure to various stages involved in cake mixing. They developed skills related to ingredient preparation, food handling, coordination, teamwork and hygienic practices.
The activity helped students connect theoretical concepts related to Food Production and Bakery with practical application. It also provided an opportunity to understand how traditional culinary activities are organised and executed within a hospitality environment.
The Cake Mixing Ceremony enabled students to gain practical knowledge of the ingredients, preparation procedures and traditional practices associated with Christmas cake production. The activity enhanced their food handling, coordination and teamwork skills while familiarising them with professional standards of hygiene and kitchen operations. It also helped students appreciate festive culinary traditions and understand their relevance to hospitality establishments.
The Cake Mixing Ceremony 2024 was successfully organised by the Department of Hospitality Science in association with IQAC. The programme provided students with a meaningful hands-on learning experience while introducing them to an important festive culinary tradition of the hospitality industry.
The active participation of students helped develop their practical food production skills, teamwork, communication and organisational abilities. The activity therefore served as a valuable experiential learning initiative and contributed to the Department's efforts towards providing industry-relevant, skill-oriented and student-centric hospitality education.
