Milagres College Organises Water Conservation Awareness Campaign
Mangaluru, July 28, 2026: Reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement, the National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of Milagres College, Mangaluru, in association with the Karnataka Rajya Mahavidyalaya Shikshakara Sangha (KRMSS), Mangaluru Division, and the Mangaluru Runners Club, organised a Water Conservation Awareness Campaign at the college auditorium.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Kavitha K. R., Joint Director, Department of Collegiate Education, Mangaluru, who highlighted the urgent need for water conservation in the face of increasing water scarcity. Addressing the gathering, she stated that water is not merely a natural resource but the very foundation of human life, agriculture, environmental sustainability, and national development. She emphasized that climate change, deforestation, irregular rainfall, depletion of groundwater, and the indiscriminate use of water have intensified the water crisis across many parts of the country. Urging students to become responsible citizens, she called upon everyone to adopt rainwater harvesting, conserve water resources, and practise sustainable lifestyles to safeguard the future.
The Chief Guest, Dr. Santosh Rai, President of the Mangaluru Runners Club and Head of the Department of Radiology at KMC Hospital, stressed the vital role of educational institutions in fostering environmental awareness among young people. He encouraged students to act as ambassadors of water conservation and contribute meaningfully towards building an environmentally conscious society.
The keynote session was delivered by Prof. Jagadish Bala, Former Principal of Government First Grade Women's College, Balmatta. Speaking on the importance of preserving water resources, he observed that the indiscriminate exploitation of water without recognising its value is a matter of serious concern. He underscored the need to live in harmony with nature and urged students to make water conservation a part of their everyday lives rather than limiting it to awareness campaigns.
The programme was presided over by Dr. Alwin Serrao, Principal of Milagres College, who appreciated the collaborative efforts of the organisers in promoting environmental responsibility among students and encouraged everyone to translate awareness into action.
Among the dignitaries present were Prof. Subhashini Srivatsa, Women's Wing Convener of KRMSS, Mangaluru Division; Mr. Chandrashekar Shetty, Member of Mangaluru Runners Club; and Dr. Madhav M. K., State Joint General Secretary of KRMSS.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Mr. Joel Mascarenhas, NSS Programme Officer, followed by an introduction by Ms. Mamatha Shetty. The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Vanya, while the programme was compered by Ms. Krithi.
The awareness campaign witnessed enthusiastic participation from 96 students and 6 faculty members, reaffirming Milagres College's commitment to promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable development through meaningful academic and extension activities.
